WA Referees were very fortunate to have National Referee Coaches Andrew Cole and Matt Goddard present for a Referee Coach weekend (12-13 April).
16 referee coaches attended the weekend activities which included the full coaching process and in depth reviews of the referee performances on six of the weekend's matches.
Coaches met on Saturday morning for a briefing from Andrew Cole on the practicalities of their role as Referee Coaches - what to look for and how to look for it. The group then watched some junior games at Brittania before splitting for the afternoon matches.
Matt Goddard went with WA Coaches Ian Hailes, Brent Mews and others to McGillivray Oval for the Premier and Reserve Grade Games between University Of WA and Nedlands. Meanwhile Andrew Cole watched other Premier games with James Sherriff and Anthony O’Shea.
All coaches then assembled on Sunday morning to summarise the feedback that could and should be provided to the respective referees, and to ensure that the major points raised were along the lines of the ARU Referee Profile.
The WA referees would like to thank ARU for assisting in facilitating this valuable development and education weekend.
A similar development and education weekend will take place in Melbourne with local referee coaches on 24th May.
