Reason you started refereeing?
After retiring from playing I still wanted to be involved in the game having refereed at school I thought it may be good to continue down that track. I had coached for a while but found coaching very frustrating.
Best on-field rugby highlights?
I remember refereeing my first 1st grade game at Parramatta after Andy Bernard came off injured in the first 2min of the game. So the players were very sympathetic and made my life on the field very easy. (A freebie you might say).
Refereeing my first test match (Japan vs Tonga) was also an amazing experience. It was something I had been working towards it for many years and to finally do it was a real buzz.
Best off-field rugby highlights?
Travelling to South Africa with a couple of Aussie referees and going to Sun City for a week. Great time.
Also, travelling to Korea for a test match and then being escorted around the demilitarized zone, an experience I won’t forget.
Occupation and interests outside of rugby?
Currently working as Director of Development Trinity Grammar School
I run a small personal training business, and am also currently a surf lifesaver at Copacabana Beach SLSC.
Best refereeing advice you’ve been given?
Firstly, those aspiring to referee must know their law backwards. I would like to suggest that having a personality on the field is important. Be yourself. Lastly, be patient, get fit and listen more than speak!
