Reason you started refereeing?
In year 10 at school, all students had to choose an activity for Friday afternoons and one of those was to help the younger Rugby teams. Standing on the sideline running water didn’t really appeal to me so I decided to pick up the whistle and start refereeing. From there started to really enjoy it. Tried to referee as many games as possible while still playing at the time.
After 4 years of playing Premier Rugby in Perth, I decided to have a go at refereeing full time. I found it very hard hanging up the boots for the first couple of months but I haven’t looked back since. I have been lucky enough to be given the opportunity and I will look to make the most of the opportunity the ARU has given me.
Best on-field rugby highlights?
A memory that has stuck with me is from my U/9 playing days when I had the opportunity to play at half-time at the Perth Test Match. Scoring a try in front of 40 thousand people was an amazing feeling. After this my dream was always to do it again and as it won’t happen while playing, it still is a possibility to be able to referee in front of that many people.
A couple of refereeing highlights up until now are making my Super Rugby AR debut, and refereeing the Oceania 7s Tournament. Being in that professional environment is an awesome experience. The pace of the game and now knowing what is required to referee at that level is invaluable.
Best off-field rugby highlights?
Best off field rugby highlight was a tour to South Africa. Being able to tour a country that is so passionate about their rugby was awesome. The thing that stood out to me was a Township side that we played against - the after-match function and the effort they put into treating us so well. For a team that couldn’t even afford a team uniform was quite remarkable. Their attitude to life and especially how welcoming they were opened my eyes.
Rugby allows you to meet so many people around the world and I look forward to continuing this in the future.
Occupation and interests outside of rugby?
I currently work for RugbyWA as the Education, Retention and PSA Manger. This involves looking after all accreditation processes within the state and coach match official offerings.
I am sport mad, love the beach and have a very keen interest in Major League Baseball.
Best refereeing advice you’ve been given?
If your game awareness and knowledge of team tactics is sound, decision making and identifying the correct picture becomes a lot easier.
