DAVID POCOCK, the next generation of the dashing openside flank breed, highlighted his readiness to back up George Smith and Phil Waugh at national level, after another impressive Investec Super 14 campaign with the Western Force. The Zimbabwean-born fetcher was again one of the Perth side’s most consistent performers, as he had been during first full Super rugby season for the Force in 2007.
Pocock led the Australian side to the Under-20 World Cup in June and later took charge of the Western Force development side which toured the United Kingdom. His selection for the Qantas Wallabies has come six years to the day after his family arrived in Australia to settle. Pocock has also previously represented Queensland at schools level in his other chosen sport, water polo.
2005 Member of Australia Schools Squad
2006 Joined Western Force in Super 14, making his debut in the final round against the Sharks; Member of Australian Under 19s squad
2007 Regular squad member of Western Force Super 14; selected in Wallabies train-on squad in May; represented Australia A against Tonga, Japan and Fiji. Member of Perth Spirit in Australian Rugby Championships, though injury kept him sidelined until the final rounds.
2008 Enjoyed another industrious season for the Force, featuring in all but one of the team’s matches, making a big impression as the Perth side won twice in both South Africa and New Zealand. Then stepped up to the captaincy plate, firstly leading Australia to the IRB Under-20 World Cup, before also taking the leadership reigns on the Western Force development tour of the United Kingdom.
