Although sparingly used on the field in 2008 due to a frustrating run with injury, ADAM FREIER continued to offer fine service for the Wallabies in a support and mentoring, as well as a playing, capacity. A former national age-group captain, Freier’s career has been marked by its perseverance: he played just four Test matches between 2003 and 2006 after having featured four times during his maiden Wallaby season in 2002. Popular among his peers, the Randwick stalwart is edging closer to a century of Super rugby caps, having debuted for the Brumbies in 2002. He played six matches for the Canberra-based outfit before linking with the Waratahs, for whom he has featured on 73 occasions, in 2003.
-2001 Signed with the Brumbies where he made his state debut against Queensland as well as captaining the Australian Under 21 team.
Made his Super 12 debut with the Brumbies and capped off his first year of professional rugby by making his Test debut against Argentina on the opening match of the Spring Tour. He started in two of the remaining three Tests on the tour.
Signed with the Waratahs and was selected in the Wallabies winter squad, earning a further two Test caps during the Tri Nations.
Played every Super 12 match and captained the Waratahs on their development tour of Argentina.
After starting in seven out of 12 matches for the Waratahs he made a return to Test rugby as a replacement in the Tri Nations match against New Zealand in Auckland.
Celebrated his 50th Super Rugby cap and won the Mathew Burke Cup for Waratahs Player of the Year before earning selection in the Wallabies squad and starting the second Test against England at hooker. A foot injury suffered during the match curtailed his winter Test campaign.
Captained the Waratahs on seven occasions after regular skipper Phil Waugh was injured during the early rounds. Played in every international for the Wallabies, and opened his try scoring account in senior internationals, crossing the line against Japan and Canada at the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
Featured in his second Investec Super rugby final with the Waratahs, before being named as one of three hookers in Robbie Deans’ maiden Wallaby squad. While he managed just 38 minutes of on-field Test duty in the year, this was spread across five matches.
