The experienced Toby Smith has proven to be an astute signing by the Melbourne Rebels, who lured the talented prop from the Chiefs in New Zealand, fresh off winning the 2012 & 2013 Super Rugby competitions. Born in Far North Queensland, Smith moved to Australia from New Zealand to chase international selection and took another valuable step towards realising his goal after being named in Michael Cheika’s initial 40-man Wallabies 2015 squad. Smith is a strong set-piece prop as well being a mobile and confident ball-runner who is no stranger to finding open space. The 27-year-old recently extended his contract with the Rebels until the end of 2017. He has accumulated 65 Super Rugby appearances in six seasons, four of which were spent in Waikato with the Chiefs. In September this year, Smith was awarded his first Test cap off the bench against the USA Eagles at Soldier Field, playing tight head prop, before earning a starting debut against Uruguay. Smith came off the bench in the Wallabies World Cup semi-final against Argentina.
