Biography

Melbourne-born Peter Samu is an explosive ball carrying backrower. With an American Samoan father and a Samoan mother, his parents flew the flag for the All Blacks, but young Peter supported the Wallabies. Samu actually played halfback until the U18s before his schoolboy coach shifted him into the back row. After school, he played club rugby for Randwick and was briefly in the Waratahs' wider training squad under then coach Michael Foley. Samu also spent two seasons in England with the St Ives club in Cornwall before he returned to Randwick. In 2014, Samu moved to New Zealand, playing club rugby in Nelson with Waimea Old Boys and from there earned a call-up to the Tasman Makos later that season. After a standout season for the Crusaders development side, Samu was called into the Crusaders Super Rugby squad as injury cover, ultimately earning a permanent place. He signed with the Brumbies ahead of the 2019 season, making him eligible for the Wallabies once again.
