Gary Ella has returned to the club he first joined as a teenage prodigy with his appointment as head coach of Sydney grand finalist Randwick.
The former Wallabies centre played 134 first grade games for the Galloping Green after arriving on the scene in the late 1970’s.
He also coached Randwick to a reserve grade premiership in 1990 and the top grade title the following year.
His latest connection with the club follows stints at Parramatta, Penrith and Irish club Leinster.
Also a member of the NSW under 19, Australian under 19, NSW Waratahs and Australia A coaching staffs over the years, his experience was considered a major asset alongside incumbent coach Mark Giacheri.
“I believe we have the best man for the job” said Randwick Rugby’s General Manager Chris Heath, adding that the Ella influence will ensure the continuation of the club’s attacking philosophy.
“The time is right, with the resurgence of tribalism in club rugby. Crowds are returning to Coogee Oval looking for that exciting brand of running rugby.”
“Gary has also had a very distinguished career both on and off the field.”
Ella played five Australian Schoolboys Tests and six Tests for the Wallabies. He also represented the NSW Waratahs in 25 games and played two internationals for the Australian under 21 team.
