The Suncorp Australian Schoolboys have been beaten for the first time in four matches on their tour to Tonga and New Zealand.
Hurricane Schools upset the Australians 24-21 in miserable conditions at Palmerston North this afternoon.
Both sides scored three tries but the visitors were struggling to defend a previously unbeaten record after falling behind 17-3 after just 20 minutes.
A turnover from the kickoff provided Hurricane Schools with an opportunity to post a try inside the opening minute.
By halftime the Australians had reduced the deficit to 17-8 with a try to centre Tim Bennetts.
The Australians scored their final two tries over the last 10 minutes, through flanker Josh Ellise-Flint and reserve flyhalf Robbie Coleman.
The Suncorp Australian Schoolboys play the final match of their tour on Friday – a Test against New Zealand Schools at New Plymouth.
Hurricane School 24 (Asa Tuali 2, Ashton Tuck tries; Hayden Cripps 3 cons, pen goal) def Suncorp Australian Schoolboys 21 (Josh Ellise-Flint, Tim Bennetts, Robbie Coleman tries; James Ambrosini 2 pen goals).
