Wallabies veteran Adam Ashley-Cooper will head to Japan for the 2017-18 season, signing with the Kobelco Steelers.

Ashley-Cooper was not re-signed by his French club Bordeaux, despite consistent form, leaving him without a clear destination for next season.

This will be Ashley-Cooper's fourth club, having played for the Brumbies, Waratahs and Bordeaux in his 13-year career so far.

The Steelers announced his acquisition on their website on Friday, with a comment by Ashley-Cooper translated as below.

"I first went to Japan on a rugby tour at 18 and stayed for two weeks," it read.

"Since then, I have wanted to come back and play and live in Japan.

"I'm looking forward to having a new challenge, meeting new teammates and playing against the best in the Top League."

The 33-year-old joins Matt Giteau in the Japanese Top League, after his long-time Wallabies teammate signed with Suntory.

The Top League season kicks off on August 18.
