Isaac Lucas is set to become the fourth Lucas brother to represent Australia in Sevens, named in the national youth side after last week’s tournament.
Lucas was one of 13 picked in the national boys’ squad, following brothers Tom, Ben and Matt into the sevens fold, with senior national squad member Dylan Pietsch one of the other big names in the team to feature in the World Youth Sevens in Auckland this weekend.
The teen has had a super 2016, named Queensland’s schoolboy player of the year and playing for the national school side against New Zealand earlier in the year.
Senior sevens squad members Demi Hayes and Hannah Southwell have both been included in the girls’ side after the championships in Perth last week.
Australia’s boys will take on New Zealand, Samoa, NZ Fijians, Cook Islands and the NZ Barbarians, with the girls taking on the new Zealand Condors, Wasps and Samoa.
ARU sevens pathways services manager Dale Roberson said the quality of the recent national competition had set a high bar.
“We are going away with a plan to expose younger players to international competition. This tournament will be an important milestone for many of them as they work towards representing Australia at the Youth Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympics and then potentially progressing to higher honours with the national teams,” he said.
The sides will be trying to put their best foot forward ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.
