Australian Rugby Union has extended its congratulations to the NSW Waratahs on their maiden Super Rugby title after they defeated the Crusaders 33-32 on Saturday night at ANZ Stadium in Sydney.

In front of an Asteron Life Super Rugby record crowd of 61 823, NSW fought hard against the most successful franchise in Super Rugby history to claim the victory.

The NSW side recorded their 9th consecutive victory of the 2014 Asteron Life Super Rugby season and their first against the Crusaders since 2004.

Fans of the NSW Waratahs will get the chance to join in the celebrations this Tuesday 5 August at Martin Place in Sydney from 12.15pm as the NSW side joins state Premier Mike Baird to thanks fans for their support.

Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver congratulated the Waratahs on their stellar effort.

“On behalf of the wider Australian Rugby community, I would like to congratulate the NSW Waratahs on a historic Asteron Life Super Rugby title for 2014,” Mr Pulver said.

“The NSW Waratahs have raised the bar for the Australian conference and their success is a true testament to the quality of Rugby they have produced this season.

“They have created a piece of history by finishing the regular season in first-place and winning the club’s first ever Super Rugby title against a strong Crusaders outfit.

“The Waratahs efforts have been complemented by a strong Australian conference in 2014 -The ACT Brumbies made the semi-finals and the Western Force had their best season in the history of the club.

“Although they didn’t have the seasons they set out to have, the Queensland Reds and Melbourne Rebels continued to inspire their fans and will come back better and stronger next year.

“Our five Super Rugby teams collectively won more matches this year than they ever have in Super Rugby with 40 wins this year compared to 37 in 2013 or 32 in 2012.

“Australian Rugby now turns its focus towards the 2014 Castrol EDGE Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup.”

From tomorrow, the Qantas Wallabies begin their Bush2Bledisloe tour as they journey through regional NSW to prepare to take on the All Blacks at ANZ Stadium on Saturday 16 August.
