Australian Rugby Union today announced former international referee Scott Young has been appointed to oversee Australia’s match officials, with a focus on increasing the number of referees nationally.

Young has been appointed Pathway Service Manager – Officiating, with a remit to enhance Australian match official representation on all levels and provide opportunities for male and female referees in the 15 and seven-a-side game.

Young boasts an impressive Rugby pedigree, having refereed 25 Test matches and 49 Super Rugby games. The two-time Rugby World Cup Official and former Super Rugby Referee of the Year re-joins Australian Rugby Union having previously worked as the Championships and Tournament Director just over 15 years ago.

Young stressed the importance of supporting Rugby officials on a community and professional level in the build up to the Rugby World Cup 2015 and beyond.

“I’m excited to be working full time again with the ARU in this crucial role. The key objectives are to increase overall participation on a community level, while at the same time identifying talent across the nation that will lead to higher representation at the elite level including SANZAR and IRB.”

Young is also an experienced business leader, having enjoyed 10 years with AMP Property Investments Ltd in a variety of positions including Senior Property Management and Project Management roles.

Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver said: “We’ve recognised that we have had a gap in our organisation and by creating this role and appointing someone with Scott Young’s credentials, we are confident the future of refereeing in this country is in good hands. Having a role of this nature brings Australian Rugby in line with our counterparts in New Zealand and South Africa as well as other major unions in the Northern Hemisphere.”
