Goromaru to feature in Reds trial

Japanese fullback Ayumu Goromaru will come off the bench for the Queensland Reds in their second trial, against the Brumbies.

Goromaru was unveiled to the media earlier this week and trained with the Reds squad for the first time on Monday.

The 29-year-old will have to wait to make his first appearance for the Reds, with Karmichael Hunt starting at 15 for Friday night’s trial.

Goromaru’s Japanese teammate Hendrik Tui, has also been added to the Reds bench after returning from Top League side Suntory.

This time around Tui returns to Queensland fully fit, a far cry from his injury-affected 2015 Super Rugby season.

Emerging halves Nick Frisby and Jake McIntyre will be on display for the second week in a row as they look to build a long-term partnership.

Wallabies prop Greg Holmes will start at tighthead, in his first match since last year’s Rugby World Cup final, in the only change to Queensland’s starting side from last Saturday’s 31-3 loss.

Junior Laloifi will make his first appearance for the Reds after earning a contract with his strong for min the NRC for Brisbane City, coming off the bench.

Former NRL winger Eto Nabuli has retained his starting spot on the wing for the clash, Cult hero prop Taniela “Tongan Thor” Tupou has missed out.

Discipline will be a focus for the Reds in the match against the Brumbies, after multiple yellow cards cost them dearly in their opening trial.

Reds coach Richard Graham said his team needed to make the most of the opportunities presented to him.

"It's a good opportunity for us continue to challenge ourselves and the way we want to play this season.

"The fact we get to play at Ballymore again is an added bonus.

"This is our final trial before the season proper kicks off.

“We did some good things last weekend but we want to see more from the group Friday night.

“We have been working hard to create pressure and we need capitalise on those opportunities.”

The Reds face the Brumbies at Ballymore at 8:30pm AEDT on Friday night.
