The Junior Gold Cup (JGC) round is entering its second week of competition with the opening matches containing the high quality Rugby expected of the JGC.

Victoria continued the dominance they showed in the inaugural year of the JGC with Victoria in both the Under 15s (52-10) and Under 17s (31-22) defeating Western Sydney.

In Queensland there were some good results including a tight win by Brisbane Orange against North Coast 10-7 in the Under 17s whilst Central Queensland defeated Gold Coast 19-12.

Western NSW relish JGC

Heading into the second week of Junior Gold Cup (JGC) action ARU Media spoke to the JGC Coordinator of Western NSW & Development Officer, Mark DeBrincat, about the impact the competition is having on regional NSW, as the ARU look uncover future Rugby stars across the nation at an U15s & U17s level.

“We have a good mix of kids from a wide area. We cover from Lithgow to Narromine and then some of the boarding schools further west such as Walgett and Warren, so we’re covering a lot of territory.”

Western NSW have started the competition off strongly with both the U15s & U17s winning their opening match against Illawarra 10-7 & 20-10 respectively.

“They were both two really close games, not a lot between them, especially in the 15’s it was very tight contest, with a late try to the Western guys sealing the victory.

“Charlie Mortimer captained the U17s in the centres and led from the front, while second rower Ryan McCracken was very effective scoring a try for us.”

DeBrincat praised the JGC for allowing kids around Australia an opportunity to showcase their skills throughout an elite competition.

“These kids are getting exposed to the highest level of Rugby any of them have ever played, and the opportunities around them are endless. It’s a great introduction to what Rugby is all about.”

The Western NSW teams will travel to Sydney this weekend to take Sydney West at the home of Eastwood Rugby Club, TG Milner on Sunday from 10am.
