In the opening match of Round 4 of the Investec Super 14, the Hurricanes beat the Highlanders 10-6 in a defensive struggle at Dunedin on Friday night.
In only their third win in Dunedin in the 13 years of Super Rugby, the Hurricanes scored early points, up 10-nil in the first ten minutes, then defended for the rest of the game.
Within the first ten minutes, Hurricanes’ Jerry Collins crossed for a strong counter-attacking try and looked set to continue on with it. But it was the only time the Hurricanes threatened the Highlanders’ line.
The Highlanders played a kicking game, aimed into the box and backed it up with some solid scrum work, but they weren’t able to get over the Hurricanes line.
Going into the half-time break, the score was 10-6 with no points scored in the second half. The Highlanders had plenty of chances later in the match, but were unable to penetrate the Hurricanes defence. Even when the Hurricanes were down to 14 men with Nonu in the sin bin for ten minutes for a high tackle on Newland, they couldn’t make the most of it.
The Highlanders have now lost their last four games with narrow losses, and will use the bye next week to regroup, while the Hurricanes take on the Brumbies in Canberra next Friday night.
