The Hurricanes have downed the Queensland Reds 23-18 in a tough Investec Super 14 clash at Westpac Stadium in Wellington last night.
The Reds led 10-0 early lead after a Schifcofske penalty was followed by a try to lock Van Humphries in the 14th minute after he brushed off some soft Hurricanes defence.
However the Hurricanes hit back through a try to Tane Tu'ipulotu and two Jimmy Gopperth penalties.
At 13-all it was all for the taking and All Blacks winger Ma’a Nonu provided the spark the home team desperately needed when he scored off a 80m counter-attack. Gopperth converted, before scoring another penalty to extend the margin to 23-13
Down by 10 points, Queensland were thrown a lifeline when flanker John Roe scored his third try of the season to narrow the gap to 23-18. Schifcofske missed the difficult conversion attempt.
Worringly for the Reds, flanker Hugh McMeniman sufefred an ankle injury while halfback Sam Cordingley has a knee complaint.
Hurricanes 23 (Tane Tu'ipulotu, Ma'a Nonu tries; Jimmy Gopperth 2 cons, 3 pens) defeated Queensland Reds 18 (Van Humphries, John Roe tries; Clinton Schifcofske con, 2 pens)
