The Lions have beaten the Cheetahs with a nail-biting 23-22 win in their first round match of the 2008 Investec Super 14 season in South Africa this morning.
The lead changed many times, but two late penalties to Earl Rose clinched the match for the Lions.
The Cheetahs got off to a flying start, with winger Eddie Fredericks scoring in the corner in the second minute of the match.
Quickly responding, Louis Strydom kicked a penalty, then from close range, the Lions pack rumbled the line with lock Franco van der Merwe crashing over the line.
Seconds before halftime, Cheetahs lock Barend Pieterse scored, giving his team a 19-13 half time lead.
In the second half, a try from Doppies La Grange put the Lions within a point of the Cheetahs, with two late kicks from Earl Rose giving the Lions the win away from home.
