The Chiefs have extended the Queensland Reds' losing streak to seven straight in the Investec Super 14 with a come-from-behind 21-19 win at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

The New Zealanders, which still harbour ambitions of making the playoffs, had second-rower Kristian Ormsby to thank after the lock barrelled over for two tries either side of half-time.

Flanker David Croft replied - when the Chiefs were down to 14 men with Liam Messam sin-binned - to hand the Reds a 16-10 lead and when Andrew Walker kicked his fourth penalty, the bottom-placed Queenslanders were also 19-18 ahead with five minutes remaining.

But opposition fly-half Stephen Donald held his nerve after a handful of second-half mistakes to reply with his third penalty of the night and give the visitors their second successive Super 14 win.

The Chiefs were bolstered before the clash with the return of All Blacks Byron Kelleher and Sitiveni Sivivatu in the backline while the Reds welcomed back Wallabies hooker Stephen Moore for his first run-on appearance of the year.

But after a spritely start, Queensland, which promised a more expansive play this weekend, fell behind when Ormsby pinched the ball off the side of a controlled rolling maul and flung himself the remaining two metres to give his side a 10-3 advantage.

Walker had a golden chance to open his Reds try account when he gathered his own kick after a favourable bounce before being tackled into touch by the retreating Sivivatu.

In a mistake-ridden match, the Reds bounced back when 18-year-old Quade Cooper made amends for six knock-ons with a well-timed popped pass to Croft, who smashed past Sione Lauaki and dived under the posts.

The visitors were one man down when Croft crossed after South African referee Willie Roos yellow-carded Messam for a harsh high tackle on wing Peter Hynes.

Queensland's six -point half-time lead was eroded within two minutes of the restart when Lauaki was cut down by Mitch Chapman but Ormsby maintained the momentum and grounded on the line for his second try of the night.

Donald hit the upright with an easy conversion to see the Chiefs stay one-point adrift of the desperate hosts who spurned a gilt-edged opportunity themselves when captain John Roe fumbled just a metre from the line.

The Chiefs No.10 was then guilty of passing up a similarly certain chance when he fumbled a pass from Sivivatu with the try-line gaping before another costly miss with a 40m penalty kept the score at a nervy 18-16.

Kelleher was next to let the nerves get to him, kicking out on the full to allow Walker to slot over his fourth penalty and give Queensland the lead in the shadows of full-time.

But Donald atoned for his earlier mistakes - when substitute Ernest Skelton, on for injured prop Herman Hunt, infringed at the ruck directly from the restart - and slotted over the posts to secure victory and keep the Reds at the foot of the ladder.
