A prodigious young talent in many sports, Hannan Southwell began her professional sporting career in 2014 playing for the Newcastle Jets W-League team as goalkeeper. In January 2016, Southwell was then named in the Matildas squad.
Southwell also played state cricket as a teenager before committing to a future in Rugby Sevens at the age of 17.
Her call up to the national squad came two and a half years after she was spotted by Head Coach Tim Walsh at a NSW Talent ID day, where she stood out for her powerful running, her step and her pinpoint passing to the left and right.
