Smith set to fill sizeable Brumbies boots

With Kyle Godwin and Aidan Toua out for the rest of the Super Rugby season, the Brumbies will need utilities like Andrew Smith to step up in their finals tilt.

Smith replaced Toua when he limped off with an ankle injury against the Reds and while he gave away the penalty which sunk the Brumbies at the death, the 32-year-old showed he is a more than capable replacement for Stephen Larkham's side as they prepare for finals football.

Smith puts that down to the full squad mentality the coaching staff have cultivated throughout season 2017.

"They've been playing really good footy so not only is it disappointing from a team point of view but a personal point of view for them as well," Smith said of the two injuries.

"It gives an opportunity for a couple of guys to step up.Aidan Toua could be out six weeks. Photo: Getty Images"We will just see how it pans out - that's the the good thing about this squad, there are a lot of guys that can play in different positions

"I can play 12, there's Nick Jooste, Jordan Jackson-Hope - a lot of guys have trained in that position."

The Brumbies go into Saturday's clash with the Chiefs chasing momentum.

Should they win, they will have a full head of steam prior to their home quarter final but should they lose, it will be a tough task to turn their form around in a sudden death clash.Smith can cover all bar the halves for the Brumbies. "Then we can build off things with one eye on this game and one eye on the finals.

"In finals footy, every moment of the game counts.

"You need intensity, you need to be focused for the whole game.

"You can't switch off, all those little moments will cost you and potentially cost you the game as well - every moment is key.

The Brumbies take on the Chiefs in Waikato on Saturday, kicking off at 3:15pm AEST, broadcast LIVE on FOX SPORTS.
