Tony McGahan is eyeing a move to the Reds as an understudy to Nick Stiles as his career at the Rebels draws to a close.

RUGBY.com.au understands McGahan will join the Reds as a senior assistant to Nick Stiles, a move that would add some experience to an otherwise inexperienced coaching staff.

Stiles is currently flanked by Shane Arnold and Jason Gilmore as his two assistants and while both have terrific track records at school and club level, they are still in their first year as assistant coaches at Super Rugby level.

The move would be a homecoming for the Warwick-bred coach, as he got his start guiding Nudgee College and Churchie 1st XV programs before taking the reigns at Easts.

He then joined the professional ranks at Munster before returning to Australia as Robbie Deans' offsider.

That led to the Rebels job but the two parties have agreed to go their separate ways, opening the door for this opportunity.Nick Stiles and the Reds are in need of a coach with McGahan's experience. "As we do every year, there will be a review of the Reds program at the conclusion of the Super Rugby season," a spokesman said.

"As such, it would be premature and inappropriate to comment on speculation, or on any potential changes or additions to the coaching staff until the season is over and the review has been completed."
