Waratahs win nailbiter in Japan against Suntory

by Sam Phillips

A Cam Clark conversion charge down has proved the difference for the Waratahs in their clash with Suntory in Tokyo on Sunday, as they emerged with a 21-19 victory.

Both sides scored three tries - the Tahs crossing through Michael Wells, David Horwitz and Bryce Hegarty - but Clark's charge down of a Hikaru Tamura conversion attempt in the second half was instrumental in the final scoreline.

The Tahs trailed 14-7 at the break and that was extended to a 19-7 gap when Suntory crossed with 10 minutes gone in the second term.

The visitors fought back with Horwitz's try two minutes later before Reece Robinson spotted a gap at the fringe of a breakdown, shot clear and put Hegarty away for his try with 20 minutes to play.

Suntory peppered the Waratahs line late but Hegarty's conversion would be the final scoring act, as the visitors held on.
