Classics go regional in Queensland

by Staff Writer

Classic Wallabies Luke Burgess, Berrick Barnes & Stephen Hoiles set off on a three-day road trip to regional NSW and Queensland last week to help show some support for the Stockman Rugby team who are touring NZ and Argentina later this year.

Classic Wallaby Guy Shepherdson will come out of rugby retirement to take part in this tour with the stockmen.

Stockman Rugby Union is an international touring team that aims to provide an avenue for aspiring rugby players from rural and regional Australia to develop their rugby against international competition in a character building environment.

With ambassadors, such as Mark Ella, John Eales and head coach Chris Roche the Stockman have a close link with the Classic Wallabies.

The regional tour covered over 1500km and the Classics Wallabies visited towns of Rowena, St George & Toowoomba attending multiple Schools and Rugby Clubs in each town.

A total of roughly 500 kids were given a Wallaby experience with Luke, Berrick and Stephen spending time both in the class room and hosting coaching clinics at each venue along with some help from the QRU's local development officer.

The week finished with a fundraising dinner at Toowoomba’s spotted cow which was also attended by Shepherdson & injured Wallaby and Reds prop James Slipper.

Fox Sports “Kick & Chase “ covered the entire trip and a feature will go to air in June sometime.

The Classic Wallabies would like to thank all those involved in making this trip a success and we look forward too many more of these regional tours throughout Australia.
