Sydney is on track for another Women’s XVs nationals title, with the defending champions leading the way on day one at Runaway Bay.

Looking for a hat-trick this year, the powerhouse side started their title defence perfectly, with two bonus-point wins over South Australia Barbarians and the Australian Defence Force. 36-0 and 68-0, respectively.

They ran in 16 tries across the two matches, almost double that of any team across the competition, putting them on top of the lot heading into Saturday.

WA sits behind Sydney in Pool A, with two wins from as many games, but just a +39 points difference, with SA and the ADF still searching for that first win.

Flanker Grace Hamilton, a capped Wallaroo, was one of the best for Sydney on the opening day and said they had to take another step up in their last pool match, against the westerners.

“We always have a bit of a target on our back, but there’s a lot of new faces and we’re just trying to come together and string some good performances,” she said.

“Our focus is getting a step higher than we did today, we’ve got a lot of things to work on but it was a good stepping stone into the next couple of days.”

The competition has an extra edge to it this year, with World Cup spots on the line as well as state pride and Hamilton said that gave things a different flavour.

“Obviously everyone wants to play with  pride in their state and though there’s that camaraderie between teams, people are fighting for their positions and that jersey,” she said.

Queensland sits on top of Pool B, undefeated and with a +51 points difference after beating Victoria and NSW Country in their opening two matches.

ACT is second in that pool, also with two wins but a points difference of +37, while Victoria and NSW Country found themselves without a pool win.

The final pool matches will be played on Saturday, before finals day on Sunday decides the overall winner.

The ADF takes on SA in the first match on Saturday, kicking off at 9:30am AEST, with all games LIVE on RUGBY.com.au.
