Australia star Lewis Holland has been ruled out of the Rio Olympics after suffering a minor hamstring tear.

Tom Kingston will come into the side after the playmaker was forced off early into the second half against Spain.

“Lewis is obviously devastated…he is a big part of our team,” Australia captain Ed Jenkins said after day one.

“The key playmaker for us so to lose him is pretty devastating but we have had quite a bit of the season without him so there’s guys that can definitely fill his shoes tomorrow.”

A rollercoaster 24 hours for Holland who’s partner Charlotte Caslick starred in Australia’s Gold medal match against New Zealand.

Holland’s role to be decided upon overnight by coach Andy Friend with James Stannard, Tom Kingston and John Porch the likely replacements.

“There’s guys that can easily step into that ball playing position,” Jenkins said.

“It’s not going to be a worry for us tomorrow.”

The injury only adds to a tough day for Australia who suffered were beaten by world number 11 France in their opening clash.

Andy Friend’s side bounced by against Spain but were forced to do it the hard way, earning a 26-12 win after trailing in the first half.
