The Hurricanes have now won 12 of their last 14 encounters against the Reds after defeating Queensland 24-14 in Wellington.

Both sides were coming off disappointing defeats last week and were eager to get back to their winning ways.

The Hurricanes were forced to make five changes to their lineup after five players were suspended for breaking curfew last week in South Africa, but that didn’t stop the home side. The Hurricanes celebrate after scoring one of their five trues. Photo: Getty Images

The Reds were on the board early through the boot of Japanese cult hero Ayumu Goromaru who returned to the starting lineup for the first time since round one.

Beauden Barrett showed his magic just 10 minutes later with a pinpoint kick to Super Rugby debutant Wes Goosen who bolted away for his first try.

The Hurricanes continued to show spark in attack but were unable to execute on the scoreboard as the Reds defence held strong.

The Reds had a great opportunity to score in the 20th minute when a Nick Frisby break set up Anthony Faingaa, but the inside centre was unable to control the ball.

Queensland had done well to stay in the game until Hendrik Tui received a yellow card in the 40th minute, with Dane Coles taking full advantage at the ensuing rolling maul to extend the ‘Canes lead.

The Reds came out of the sheds with a lot of intent early as Goromaru nailed his third penalty of the match to narrow the margin to just three points but minutes later former Rebels back Jason Woodward found himself on the end of another Hurricanes try.

Chris Feauai-Sautia gave the Reds hope as broke three tackles to score in the corner to narrow the margin to three with 25 minutes remaining.

The Hurricanes delivered another blow and put the game out of reach when substitute Ngani Laumape darted over for the Hurricanes fourth and bonus point try.
