Fans of the Qantas Australian Women's Sevens team were handed great news when it was confirmed that FOX SPORTS will broadcast Finals Day LIVE from Sao Paulo.
In a major boost for the promotion of female sport in Australia, FOX SPORTS 1 (Channel 501) will show all of the action from the Arena Barueri stadium in Sao Paulo from 5am AEDT on Monday 9th February with Sean Maloney calling. Those unable to watch the team in action will be able to catch up with the replay later that day from 5.30pm AEDT.
Previously only the Dubai Sevens has been broadcast to a national audience, an event that sees both the Men's and Women's tournaments taking place on the same weekend.
Australian Women's Sevens skipper Sharni Williams: "This is fantastic news not just for Women's Rugby, but for women in sport in general. In the lead up to the Olympics, this is a good opportunity for an Australian audience to see what Rugby Sevens is all about. We've a talented side and I think people will be surprised at the quality of the competition.
"In the past our families and friends back home have streamed the games online. While that is really good, this just makes it that bit easier for them!"
A FOX SPORTS spokesperson said: "FOX SPORTS is thrilled to continue our commitment to the IRB Women’s 7s World Series. With the Summer Olympic Games in Rio fast approaching, Rugby Sevens will showcase our sport like never before. We’ll get a taste of that Brazilian flavour when we broadcast the Sao Paulo leg of the World Series with our women looking to defend their title.
"The remaining legs in the USA, Canada, England and the Netherlands will also be featured on FOX SPORTS, along with our existing coverage of the Men’s HSBC Sevens World Series."
FOX SPORTS commentator Sean Maloney, who last year trained with the Australian Women's team as part of a feature for Rugby HQ on FOX SPORTS, added: "This is going to be another cracking leg of the Women’s World Series, the quality of Seven’s rugby is seriously good.
"The Aussie team are the defending Champions in Sao Paulo, they have the best Women’s Sevens player on the planet in Emilee Cherry and will be extremely hard to beat.
"It’s going to be some weekend of Sevens, Greg Clark will add an Aussie voice to the Men’s event in Wellington and I’ll have a swing from Sao Paulo on Monday morning, it’ll be a blast."
