Ella Sevens returns to Coffs Harbour

The Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development team’s Ella Sevens tournament returns to Coffs Harbour this Friday 20 February at Cex Stadium Coffs Harbour.

Named after the famed Ella Brothers- Gary, Glen and Mark- who played for the Wallabies during the 80’s the Ella Sevens tournament takes inspiration from the three Indigenous Wallabies with fast, free flowing, attacking Rugby.

The Rugby Sevens tournament for Indigenous athletes features teams from all across Australia with teams across both Men’s and Women’s tournaments competing for a total prize pool of $25,000 of prize money.

Throughout the tournament there will be 16 teams competing in the men’s competition and 10 in the women’s

The tournament reinforces healthy lifestyle habits with sponsorship Gambling Help and NSW Land Council.

Executive Office Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team Tom Evans was excited about the start of the tournament.

“Our Coffs Harbour Ella Sevens Tournament is one the highlights on the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team calendar.

“We are really looking forward to the tournament kicking off and engaging with teams from across Australia.

“For some players this will be their first taste of competition style Rugby and with Sevens now offering a clear pathway to the Olympics with the inclusion of the sport in Rio, it really is an exciting time for Indigenous athletes to play Sevens.”

Indigenous athletes and Qantas Australian Sevens Stars, Shannon Walker, Taleena Simon and Tanisha Stanton will be present at the tournament.

The Ella Sevens tournament comes a week before the National Sevens championship at the Sydney Academy of Sport that will feature a National Indigenous Team on Saturday February 28.

The side will compete against; New South Wales, Queensland, ACT, Victoria, Western Australia, Northern Territory, South Australia, Australian Services and Australian University.
