In the battle of the division two sides, day two at the 41st Australian Schools Rugby Championship saw the Northern Territory and South Australian sides claim victories in their respective matches against the Lloyd McDermott Rugby Development Team (LMRDT) and Tasmania.
The Northern Territory got off to a great start when they scored in the corner in the opening minutes of the match through Barton Picone who picked up the loose ball to crash over for the try.
Momentum stayed with the Northern Territory as LMRDT endured penalties for their infringements as the breakdown.
A second try to the Northern Territory and a penalty from right in front just before the break took the score to 13-0 at half time.
The second half saw LMRDT defending their line for multiple phases until a daring intercept from Garrison Stewart saw the LMRDT side register their first points of the match with a 90 metre try.The successful conversion took the score to 13-7.
Both team’s traded tries with LMRDT edging ahead with moments to spare thanks to a specular team try. A late charge from the Northern Territory from a turnover in the midfield saw the side crash over in the corner to seal a late 25-21 victory.
In game six of the Australian Schools Championship South Australia showed its class against Tasmania as they run in 77 points to Tasmania’s 0. A spirited Tasmanian side, although outclassed on the field showed determination in the manner for which they played.
