Learn more about the Walla Challenge

What is the Walla Challenge?

The Walla Challenge was developed using the Sport Education in Physical Education Program (SEPEP) educational model and provides students with the opportunity to organise and stage their own Walla Rugby Tournament.

Having students involved in the organising of the Walla Rugby tournament has many benefits which include:

  • Teamwork and leadership opportunities
  • Students who are reluctant to play sport can still be involved in a sporting event
  • Increased interest as students have ownership of the event
  • Development of life-long skills

Teacher Resources

When a teacher registers with the Walla Challenge, they are sent a Walla Challenge starter kit which contains all the equipment and resources required to effectively educate students in the requirements of running a Walla Rugby Tournament.

The Starter Kits includes:

  • Equipment for the Tournament i.e 3 Rugby balls, 20 markers, whistle, carry bag
  • CD of lesson resources including 4 Rugby Tournament lesson, students worksheets and video footage of Walla Rugby

What is SEPEP?

SEPEP requires students to plan, implement and participate in a sporting competition within the context of their physical education program. Key characteristics of SEPEP and the Walla Challenge include:

  • teachers sharing managerial and instructional duties with students
  • student-centred learning with teacher acting as a facilitator
  • students take on roles outside of just playing (i.e. coach, media, official)
  • students forming matched, mixed-ability teams in a formal schedule of competition
  • activity based on a sporting season
  • an end of season event to highlight achievements of the class
  • linking with the local community

What is Walla Rugby?

Walla Rugby is the safe, modified version of Rugby Union that is suitable for boys and girls of all ages. It involves a two handed tag rather than a tackle, and a non-contact ball take rather than rucks and mauls. Scrums and lineouts are also modified to ensure a safe and enjoying playing environment for all students.
