Wallaby Standards

Rugby dot point Wallaby Standards. This video (2 mins), was developed by the Wallaby Team Management to show to the 2005 Wallabies' squad as part of their induction program prior to the international Rugby season.

The Wallaby Team Management wanted to establish team standards with new and experienced Wallaby team members and used the video to stimulate team discussion about the key themes of pride, teamwork, camaraderie and tradition.

 

Suggested learning activities

Play the Wallaby Standards video. Ask students the following questions:

  • What behaviours and standards are valued by the Wallabies? Encourage students to use the dictionary to clarify meanings of words.
  • Who do you think was responsible for establishing these values?
  • Why would the video have been important to share with new and experienced Wallabies prior to the international Rugby season?

Ask students to think about a group they belong to e.g. class, school, sports team, family. Pose the following questions and get students to answer them in their notebook. 

  • What behaviours and standards are valued in your chosen group?
  • Are there any similarities and differences between the behaviours and standards valued by your chosen group and those of the Wallabies?
  • How do you discuss, share ideas about, and establish behaviours, standards and other values in your chosen group?

Challenge students to create/stage a presentation that, like the Wallaby Standards video, outlines the behaviours and standards valued by their chosen group. Communication tools could include:

  • A PowerPoint presentation
  • A forum
  • A video
  • A poster

Encourage students to show their presentation with their chosen group. Additionally, organise a time for students to share their presentations with the rest of the class. Discuss the value and impact of the presentation on others.
