Laws of the game
The Laws of the Game are created and governed by the International Rugby Board (IRB) and provide the framework for a game that is both enjoyable to play and entertaining to watch. The laws ensure that Rugby’s distinctive features are maintained through scrums, line-outs, mauls, rucks, kick-offs and re-starts. Also the key features relating to contest and continuity - the backward pass, the offensive tackle. The laws are subject to change but only after review and discussion by IRB committees.
The Laws of the Game include:
- Definitions
- Before the Match (The Ground, The Ball, The Team, Players’ Clothing, Time, Match Officials)
- During the Match (Method of Playing the Match, In the Field of Play, Restarts, In-goal)
- Seven-a-side Rugby law variations
- Under 19 law variations
- Junior Player Pathway Modified Games (Walla, Mini and Midi)
Click here for more information on laws of the game and law variations described above.
