Touch Judges
Training Programs for Touch Judges
The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has national training programs for referees, referee coaches and touch judges which are approved by the Australian Sports Commission under the National Officiating Accreditation Scheme.
Associated with each training program is a separate, competency-based assessment process that leads to a national accreditation. Details of the accreditation process for each discipline and level are contained in the ARU Officials Accreditation policy
Introductory (Level 1) Touch Judge Training Program
Prerequisites: Nil
Course duration: 4 hours
Outline: This course has been designed for the beginner touch judge, who has had little or no opportunity to run touch in the past. It covers the understanding of the philosophy of touch judging, applicable law knowledge, communication skills, positional play and touch line management.
The following resources will be provided to participants at the course:
On completion of this program, participants who successfully complete a Level 1 Touch Judge Law examination will be accredited as a Level 1 Touch Judge.
Intermediate (Level 2) Touch Judge Training Program
Prerequisites: Level I Touch Judge
Course duration: 8 hours
Outline: This course has been designed for the referee and touch judge, who are somewhat experienced but require an advanced level of touch judging instruction. The course will give the participant the chance to develop a greater understanding of touch judge philosophy, the team of officials, law knowledge and application, communication, positional play, touch line management and mental preparation.

On completion of this program, participants who successfully complete a Level 2 Touch Judge Law examination will be accredited as a Level 2 Touch Judge. In addition, depending on the knowledge and skills of the individual, satisfactory completion of a field test may also be required.
