Matt Tink – Coach Education Manager RugbyWA

How many years have you coached/officiated?

I have been coaching for 12 years and refereeing for 10 years.

What are your qualifications (coaching/officiating level)?

I am an ARU Level 3 Coach, an ARU Assessor and an ARU Level 1 Referee

How did you get involved in refereeing/coaching?

I first starting coaching whilst teaching at Waverley College. Initially I was also playing at this time, but a neck injury and subsequent operation meant I could no longer play.

Your officiating / coaching career highlight?

I have enjoyed watching players I have coached progress through the ranks, however the highlight would be winning the Central West First Grade Premiership with the mighty Dubbo Roos. Like most Country Rugby clubs the Dubbo Roos have some very committed players and volunteers and I found great joy coaching in the bush.

Your future coaching / refereeing aspirations?

I would love to coach professionally either in Australia or overseas, however, I need to improve my knowledge and increase my experience.

What attracts you most to being a State Coaching/Refereeing Manager?

In Western Australia our game continues to grow, and the major attraction is being in a position where I can assist other people who also have a genuine love of the game. The added chance to talk Rugby every day is also a great attraction

Most difficult aspect of your coaching/officiating position?

A vast majority of people who work in Rugby were once volunteers. I find it difficult to deal with people who seem to forget that I have played the game, coached the game, refereed the game, cooked the bbq, packed up the field, and swept out change rooms. Being called a “paid volunteer” frustrates me no end. Time away from family is also hard.

Coaching / Officiating idol/role model?

Ric Charlesworth – absolute determination for success, losing is not an option.
Kevin Sheedy – longevity and innovation.
Andy Friend – a willingness to share ideas and help young coaches.
Chris Hickey – people skills and simplicity in his approach.

Best advice you could give a new referee / coach ?

Coaching at any level is a difficult task. I would tell a new coach to ignore personal criticism, listen to constructive criticism and always be open to learning. Above all, challenge the way we do things in Rugby, great ideas are born out of challenging the norm.

Other interests aside from Rugby?

I enjoy most sports, but spending time with my wife Anna and son Jack is what interests me the most.

Favourite Super 14 team/favourite player?

Western Force – Scott Staniforth, after NSW released him he fought hard to become an important member of the Wallaby squad.
