Overview

The National Coaching Plan has been in existence for over thirty years and in that time both the format and structure of coaching has changed greatly.

The goals of the National Coaching Plan include:

For the ARU to provide an infrastructure to allow State Unions to cater for players by providing a coach for every team and to provide potential and current players at any age the proper basics of Rugby regardless of their socio-economic background or location.

  1. For the ARU to provide human and material resources to State Unions to aid in delivery of coaching programs.
  2. For the ARU to encourage coaches to improve their understanding of coaching through innovative educational programs.
  3. For the ARU to provide education and a career path for coaches who aspire to elite/representative coaching as a vocation.
  4. For the ARU to provide generic coaching courses that ensures consistency and quality of content throughout Australia.

The above goals can be achieved through the following outline of programs and activities, often delivered by the State member Unions.

Coaching programs form the basis of providing quality teams and players. To this end coaches can attend Coaching Courses. Potential coaches wishing to find out about courses should first communicate with their State Union Coaching Contacts.

Rugby is a game that requires many skills. First and foremost, all coaches and referees should undergo the activities covered in SmartRugby to ensure that the risk of injury is minimised. This qualification is the mandatory minimum requirement to all coaching/officiating participants in the game.

Other links that should aid the coach include Advanced Coaching Papers, Nutrition & Recovery Tips. All coaches need to understand and apply the Laws of the Game.

For convenience of the different forms of Rugby, these can be found under Pathway Laws or Laws of the Game. The ARU has also published the latest papers from the Level 3 coaches, providing technical information on the game under Coaching Resources.
