Accreditation

Both Coaching and Officiating Courses are registered with the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).

In relation to the coaching process, the following levels apply:

 

Foundation Course  (non accredited)

Level One

Level Two

Level Three

Aim/Outcomes

 

There is no "course"  for LEVEL ONE as was the case in previous years. The mandatory pre-requisite "course" is SmartRugby, which is the ARU's occupational health & safety program. The 'Foundation' course is a certificate course which provides a basic structure for coaching & officiating. It is recommended that individuals who wish to gain ASC accreditation attend a Foundation Course.

Level One 

The ARU no longer runs the traditional Level One Course. Coaches are required to attend a Foundation Course and be assessed against the Level One Coach Competencies to attain this accreditation.

Level Two

Aim/ObjectivesThis course is specifically designed for senior coaches. As such there is a greater emphasis both on the tactical aspects of each part of the game as well as the technical skills required to choose such options. It is the aim that the Level 2 course provides coaches with the ability to analyse, apply their understanding and coach correctly the roles (functional roles) a player will perform in a match.
Course Outcomes Safety - To provide the coaches with the ability to identify and coach safely the roles a player will perform in a match.

Plan - Identify the principles that underpin different levels of planning and their application to meet the needs (learning outcomes) of the players he/she is coaching.

Tactical Foundations - Identify and apply the tactical principles of team play to coach a game situation.

Sports Science - Apply the sports science knowledge to the concept of periodisation planning.

Ethics - It is incumbent on all coaches to coach within the Laws of the Game and to abide by the Code of Conduct. At all times best practice procedures and the maintenance of personal standards are required.
Course Modules The lecture units of the Level 2 Accreditation can be separated into four modules:
  • Becoming an Effective Coaching
  • Individual Skills - Key Factor Analysis
  • The Elements of Rugby
  • Ancillary Units
Pre - requisites:Current SmartRugby compliance. Level 1 accreditation is recommended, but not mandatory due to Competency Based Training outcomes.
Recognition of Prior Learning You can apply to the State Union Office for Recognition of Prior Learning or Recognition of Current Competency if you can providence evidence and current transcripts that your prior learning and experience has made you competent in the learning outcomes for this course.

Cost: $240.00 - $330.00 depending on venue and food arrangements (includes GST). Accommodation and optional resources are at the discretion of the participant and are not included in this cost.

Materials received:

  • Attend all units at a Level 2 Instruction Course
  • Attain at least 90% for your Laws exam
  • Have a coaching session recorded on Video
  • Document 60 hours of coaching 
  • Be assessed by a trained ARU assessor

Level Three

Aim/Objectives

There is a greater emphasis on advanced technical aspects and tactical aspects of rugby sports science and its impact on the game. It is the aim that all accredited Level 3 coaches are creative as well as being knowledgeable, so that the game can benefit from the individual enterprise of both themselves and their players.

This course is specifically designed for coaches at performance /advanced levels.

Course OutcomesSafety - To provide the coaches with the ability to identify and coach safely the roles a player will perform in a match.

Plan - Identify and apply the principles that underpin the levels of planning and their application to meet the needs (learning outcomes) of participation at performance levels.

Tactical Foundations - Identify and apply the tactical principles of team play to coach a game situation.

Sports Science - Apply the sports science knowledge of the theory and principles of training, sports psychology and sports medicine.

Ethics - It is incumbent on all coaches to coach within the Laws of the Game and to abide by the Code of Conduct. At all times best practice procedures and the maintenance of personal standards are required.
Course Modules

The methodology of the Level 3 Accreditation is for coaches to be pro-active, have innovative thought and satisfy that they have the skills, including time management skills, to be a Head Coach. The program can be divided into 3 modules:

  • Advanced Technical aspects of Rugby
  • Tactical aspects of Rugby
  • Sports science and its impact on the game
Pre - requisites

Applicants who wish to apply for consideration for intake should be able to meet the following requirements:

  • Be SmartRugby compliant
  • Possess a current Level 2 Coaching certificate for at least seven years and have attended an Advanced Seminar or equivalent within the last three years
  • Have experience at coaching senior representative, first division first grade, Country or 2nd Division representative, 1st XV or representative school or U/16 representative level
  • Have potential for coaching at a high representative level; Be willing to coach for the next four years

At the discretion of the ARU Level 3 Coaching Consultancy, coaches who do not satisfy all of the above criteria may be admitted to the program by being currently involved in coach education at Level 2, delivering presentations at Advanced Seminars or coach at State Squad level.

Cost: Participants pay a levy and the remaider is met by the ARU. Consequently, candidates commencing the level 3 program are required to sign a letter of intent.

Accreditation Requirements: Attend all sessions at Level 3 Instruction Camps and Complete 11 assignments to a satisfactory standard over the course of 12  months.

Application: Application Forms are forwarded to Clubs / Affiliates and schools when available from the ARU, normally in early February each year. There are 2 camps, the first (4 days) usually in November at the AIS, Canberra and a second (4days) in January/February in Sydney.
