Australian Under 20s Extended Squad

The Australian Under 20s side comprises the best up and coming players across the country. In 2015 the side will represent Australia at the Federation Oceanic Rugby Union’s Under 20s tournament and the 2015 World Rugby Junior World Championships.

The Australian Under 20s squad is selected through players’ performances at the National Under 20s Championship and a stringent selection process.

Adrian Thompson returns as Head Coach for a third consecutive year, alongside assistant coaches, Shane Arnold, Cameron Blades and the internationally experienced and successful Alan Gaffney.

Thompson has over 15 years of coaching experience, including Assistant Coach of the Queensland Reds, and Head Coaching roles with Kyuden Voltex Japan and Australia A. The coaching staff will look to bring together the best emerging Rugby talent in Australia as a part of the ARU’s Pathway to Gold program, which is focused on creating the next generation of Qantas Wallabies, Super Rugby players and Qantas Australian Sevens stars. The Under 20s program is the last stage of the Pathway to Gold.

2014 saw the restructuring of the U20s element of the talent pathway to include a Southern States Under 20s and National Under 20s Championships which have provided greater exposure and development opportunities for players, coaches and match officials.

With a strong 5th place finish in the 2014 World Rugby Under 20s Championship, Australia has drawn a tough pool this year, with last year’s runners-up South Africa, host nation Italy and Samoa.
