James Horwill is the man fans believe should lead the Qantas Wallabies against the British & Irish Lions this year, after receiving the clear majority of votes in this week’s rugby.com.au poll.
With just two months to go until the British & Irish Lions arrive on Australian shores for the first time in 12 Years, we asked fans who they think should Captain the Qantas Wallabies during this year’s Tour to Australia with final results showing a clear majority voted in favour of the Queensland Reds’ and Qantas Wallabies’ powerhouse lock.
Horwill’s stats as a player and a Captain clearly support fans’ choice. With 35 international Caps to his name, Horwill was in charge of both the Wallabies winning Tri Nations team and the Queensland Reds Super Rugby Championship winning team in 2011, in what was a hugely successful year for the talented forward.
Horwill was the first Queenslander to hold up the Super Rugby trophy in the professional era (post 1995). He’s led Australia to victory in six out of the eight matches he’s Captained, underlining fans’ faith in the 2 metre tall inspiration to do similar on the Tour that’s been 12 Years in the Making.
Horwill received 55% of votes in this week’s rugby.com.au poll, followed by Will Genia, who received 29%.
The two Queensland Reds members, who have both taken the reins for the Men in Gold were well ahead of the four other choices in the poll.
ACT Brumbies Captain, Ben Mowen and Rebels star, and recent relieving skipper, James O’Connor were tied on 6% of votes, while the Waratahs and Western Force leading men, Dave Dennis and Matt Hodgson both ended up with 2% of votes.
Fans can continue having their say with this week’s poll asking, based on the #MyRugbyTV series, who was the biggest hero of the last British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia in 2001, Jason Robinson, George Smith, Brian O’Driscoll, Daniel Herbert, Jonny Wilkinson or Joe Roff?
Over the past few months #MyRugbyTV has broadcast a Lions heroes series, showcasing the highlights of some of the Wallaby and Lions legends born out of past Lions Tours to Australia. Check out the series here and have your say about who you think was the biggest hero.
