Sydney referee Amy Perrett will represent Australia in the 2014 Women’s Six Nations Championships after being appointed by the International Rugby Board (IRB) Match Official Selection Committee.
Amy, from Ryde, Sydney, was selected on the IRB Sevens Referee Panel as one of two female representatives, making her International debut in the 2012 Women’s Sevens Challenge Cup in Hong Kong before going on to referee in the 2012-2013 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series.
“This is a dream come true for me,” said Amy. “I am honoured to be representing my country in a tournament as prestigious as the Six Nations.”
She is now a regular on the Sevens circuit having featured in the Dubai round at the end of last year with appointments to Atlanta, Sao Paulo, Guangzhou and Amsterdam all scheduled for the 2013-2014 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series.
Amy made the transition from player to referee in 2003 at just 14 years of age and has excelled with the whistle in hand ever since. She has showed aptitude for both the seven and fifteen-a-side format, representing the Australian Rugby Union Referee Squad in the Women’s National Sevens Final in 2012 and 2013 as well as the Women’s 15’s National Final in 2011.
After a successful 2013 season which saw Perrett referee the 2013 Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Moscow, Australia’s leading female referee will start the New Year in her first Six Nations Championship when Scotland v France at Howthornden, Scotland on Sunday 9 of March.
Pathway Service Manager – Officiating at Australian Rugby Union, Scott Young, said: “Everyone at the organisation is delighted for Amy. Her appointment for the Six Nations follows a successful showing in the Sevens series. It puts her in a very good position to be selected for the Women’s World Cup later this year.”
Fellow Australian and 2012 ‘Referee of the Year’ Steve Walsh will referee in the 2014 Men’s Six Nations Championship, taking charge of Italy v Scotland at Stadio Olimpico, Rome on Saturday 22 of February and France v Ireland at Stade de France, Paris on March 15.
