The votes are in and there are no surprises. Fans believe University of Canberra Brumbies recruit David Pocock to be the best buy in season 2013.
Asked to cast their vote on who had been the best buy among the Super Rugby teams, the star Qantas Wallabies flanker tallied a whopping 43% of the vote.
The man who replaced him in the Qantas Wallabies line up last year, new HSBC Waratahs flanker Michael Hooper, polled 19% of the vote to finish second. RaboDirect Melbourne Rebels recruit Scott Higginbotham finished the polling on 15% in third place while Emirates Western Force hard man Hugh McMeninman and Waratahs star Israel Falou both polled 12% to finish equal fourth.
Voting began last Wednesday prior to Pocock sustain his season ending ACL injury, however the Brumbies flanker didn’t lose any ground in the polling over the weekend and secured top spot comfortably, reaffirming his status as a super star in Australian Rugby.
With Pocock now set to be sidelined for about 6 months the primary number 7 duties at a national level could well fall to second place getter Hooper, who showed last year that he’s got what it takes turning out some sensational performances in the Gold Jersey and winning the 2012 Rookie of the Year Award at the annual John Eales Medal.
At a Super Rugby level the Brumbies will look to rely on a man who, 12 years ago took on the British & Irish Lions and won George Smith.
While most coaches would be tearing their hair out at losing the season’s best buy and a super star such as Pocock, Brumbies coach Jake White, has the ability to turn to a man who was synonymous with Wallabies and Brumbies success years ago, Smith.
